Set up ChatGPT for Kanera MCP
ChatGPT can connect to Kanera through the Model Context Protocol directly from the ChatGPT website. You do not need to download the ChatGPT desktop or mobile app.
Before you begin
You need:
- ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, or Edu for Kanera's full read and write tool set. ChatGPT Pro can connect custom MCP apps in developer mode with read/fetch access, but not full write access. Plus and Free do not currently support this setup.
- A paid or trial Kanera account.
Custom MCP apps are available on ChatGPT web. On a managed workspace, your administrator must allow developer mode. If the setting or Create action is missing, contact your workspace administrator.
Enable developer mode in ChatGPT
- Open ChatGPT in your browser.
- Enable developer mode for your account:
- Business admin or owner: Open Workspace settings -> Apps -> Create. Only workspace admins and owners can use developer mode on Business.
- Enterprise or Edu: An administrator first grants access under Workspace settings -> Permissions & Roles -> Connected Data. An enabled user then opens Settings -> Apps -> Advanced Settings and turns on Developer mode.
- Pro: Open Settings -> Apps -> Advanced Settings and turn on Developer mode. Pro connections are limited to read/fetch access.
- Open Settings -> Apps -> Create. An administrator or owner can also use Workspace settings -> Apps -> Create.
Add Kanera
Enter the following app details:
-
Name:
Kanera -
Description:
Read and manage Kanera cards, boards, comments, notes, priorities, automations, and project reports. -
MCP server URL:
https://mcp.kanera.app/mcp -
Authentication: OAuth
Select Scan Tools. ChatGPT discovers the Kanera tools and starts the OAuth connection:
- ChatGPT opens a Kanera browser tab.
- Sign in to Kanera.
- Review the requested access and choose Allow access.
- Return to ChatGPT and wait for the tool scan to finish.
- Select Create.
OAuth lets ChatGPT act as you while respecting your role on each board. You do not create, paste, or store an API key. You can review or disconnect the connection later from Profile settings -> API keys in Kanera.
Use Kanera in a conversation
-
Start a new ChatGPT conversation.
-
Open the tools menu and select the Kanera draft app. You can also refer to Kanera directly in your prompt.
-
Ask ChatGPT to use Kanera, for example:
Use Kanera to summarize the work assigned to me this week.Use Kanera to find overdue cards on the Product board. Do not update anything.Use Kanera to add a comment to the launch checklist card. Show me the proposed comment before making the change.
ChatGPT asks for confirmation based on the app permissions and the action's context. Review the tool name and input before approving changes. See Examples of how to use Kanera MCP for more workflows.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | What to check |
|---|---|
| Developer mode or Create is missing. | Confirm your ChatGPT plan and workspace role support custom MCP apps. On a managed workspace, ask an administrator to grant developer-mode access. |
| ChatGPT cannot reach the MCP server. | Confirm the MCP server URL is exactly https://mcp.kanera.app/mcp, then return to Settings -> Apps, recreate the draft if needed, and scan the tools again. |
| Kanera does not open a consent screen. | Remove the draft app, create it again, and repeat Scan Tools. |
| The connection is invalid or expired. | Recreate the draft app and start the connection again. Kanera authorization codes are single-use and expire after five minutes. |
| ChatGPT can read but cannot update work. | In ChatGPT, confirm the Kanera app is allowed to use write actions. In Kanera, confirm your user is an Editor on the target board; Observers cannot write. Reconnecting is not required for the read/write policy update. |
| ChatGPT opens Kanera in a browser for a supported card read or update. | Attach the Kanera app to the conversation and install or select the Kanera skill. Exact card keys such as DEV-938 should use Kanera tools directly; reserve the browser for visual or UI-only administration. |
| New or changed tools do not appear. | Open the draft in Settings -> Apps and scan its tools again. A published Business app must currently be recreated and republished; Enterprise and Edu administrators can refresh its actions. |
