Set up ChatGPT for Kanera MCP
ChatGPT can connect to Kanera through the Model Context Protocol directly from the ChatGPT website. You do not need to download the ChatGPT desktop or mobile app.
Before you begin
You need:
- A ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, or Education account. ChatGPT developer mode is not currently available on Free accounts.
- A paid or trial Kanera account.
On a managed ChatGPT workspace, your administrator must allow developer mode. If the developer-mode setting is missing, contact your workspace administrator.
Enable developer mode in ChatGPT
- Open ChatGPT in your browser.
- Open Settings -> Security and login.
- Turn on Developer mode.
- Open Settings -> Plugins, or go directly to chatgpt.com/plugins.
- Select the plus button to create a developer-mode app.
Add Kanera
Enter the following app details:
-
Name:
Kanera -
Description:
Use Kanera to inspect, summarize, create, and update project work. -
MCP server URL:
https://mcp.kanera.app/mcp
Select Create. ChatGPT discovers the Kanera tools and starts the OAuth connection:
- ChatGPT opens a Kanera browser tab.
- Sign in to Kanera.
- Review the requested access and choose Allow access.
- Return to ChatGPT after the connection completes.
OAuth lets ChatGPT act as you while respecting your role on each board. You do not create, paste, or store an API key. You can review or disconnect the connection later from Profile settings -> API keys in Kanera.
Use Kanera in a conversation
-
Start a new ChatGPT conversation.
-
Select the plus button beside the message composer, then select More.
-
Choose Developer mode and enable Kanera for the conversation.
-
Ask ChatGPT to use Kanera, for example:
Use Kanera to summarize the work assigned to me this week.Use Kanera to find overdue cards on the Product board. Do not update anything.Use Kanera to add a comment to the launch checklist card. Show me the proposed comment before making the change.
ChatGPT asks for confirmation before write actions by default. Review the tool name and input before approving changes. See Examples of how to use Kanera MCP for more workflows.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | What to check |
|---|---|
| Developer mode is missing. | Confirm your ChatGPT plan supports it. On a managed workspace, ask an administrator to allow developer mode. |
| ChatGPT cannot reach the MCP server. | Confirm the MCP server URL is exactly https://mcp.kanera.app/mcp, then refresh the draft app and try again. |
| Kanera does not open a consent screen. | Delete or refresh the draft app in ChatGPT and start the connection again. |
| The connection is invalid or expired. | Delete or refresh the draft app in ChatGPT and start the connection again. Kanera authorization codes are single-use and expire after five minutes. |
| ChatGPT can read but cannot update work. | Approve the write scope in Kanera and confirm your Kanera user has editor access to the board. |
| New or changed tools do not appear. | Open the app details in Settings -> Plugins and refresh the app's tools. |
