How to get the JSON file from Trello
- Open the board in Trello and click the ⋯ menu at the top right.
- Choose Print, export, and share.
- Choose Export as JSON. The browser downloads or opens a single .json file. If it opens as text, save the page with a .json name.
- Drop that file here.

Turning a Trello board into a readable Markdown archive
A spreadsheet is useful for analysis, but Markdown preserves the board as a document people and software can read without a proprietary app. Lists become second-level headings and cards become third-level headings, with their metadata and history kept beside them.
What the document includes
- Board and list structure, including archived work when selected.
- Card descriptions, labels, members, due dates, and completion state.
- Checklists rendered as Markdown task lists.
- Link attachments and chronological comments with their authors.
Where to use it
Keep the file in a repository, open it in a notes app, import it into a documentation system, or give it to an AI agent as bounded project context. Uploaded Trello files remain links because the JSON export does not contain the file bytes.
Trello export questions
Does Trello let me export to Excel or CSV for free?
No. Trello’s CSV export is part of the paid Premium plan. The JSON export is available on every plan, including Free, and contains more than the CSV does.
This tool reads that JSON export in your browser and writes Excel, CSV, or Markdown from it.
Is my Trello data uploaded anywhere?
No. The file is read by JavaScript running in your browser tab and never leaves your device. There is no server behind this page; you can disconnect from the internet after it loads and it still works.
Nothing is stored either. Reload the page and the board is gone.
Are attachments included?
Attachment names and links are included. The files themselves are not in a Trello JSON export: uploaded files appear as URLs that need a Trello login to open.

Why are some comments missing?
Trello exports at most 1,000 recent actions per board, and comments are stored as actions. On a busy board the older comments are not in the file. The Inspect view shows the raw action count so you can tell when this has happened.
Can I convert several boards at once?
One board per file, because Trello exports one board per file. Drop the next file when the first download finishes; the tool resets in a click.
What does the Excel workbook contain?
Sheets for Cards, Checklists, Comments, Attachments, Lists, Labels, Members, and Custom fields. The Cards sheet has one column per Trello custom field, and dates are real Excel dates so they sort and filter.
