Communication-first projects Kanera

Connected board operations

Views & Planning

Board view Included. Card Tables are Basecamp's kanban view, with configurable columns, movable cards, and notifications for new cards or column changes.

Included. Kanban boards with drag-and-drop cards, collapsible lists, per-list sorting, list icons and colours, and card covers.

Table view Partial or plan-gated. To-do Lists support assignees, dates, discussions, attachments, subtasks, drag and drop, and completion notifications. Basecamp does not present them as a Kanera-style editable reporting table with custom columns and calculations.

Included. An editable table on boards and across Global Work, with filtering, grouping, custom columns, Sum and Avg calculations, second-dimension breakdowns, saved setup, and Excel or JSON export.

Calendar view Included. Basecamp 5 includes full-screen project and global calendars for events, milestones, repeating entries, and dated assignments, with external calendar subscriptions.

Included. A calendar for dated cards with month and week ranges, Today navigation, filtering, due-time slots, and card actions in place, on boards and across Global Work.

Overview, health, and cross-project visibility Included. Reports include Mission Control, Lineup, Hilltop, activity, assignments, Added/Completed, Overdue, Unassigned, and Timesheets. Everything Views aggregate messages, documents, files, comments, check-in answers, and forwarded email across projects.

Included. Home covers daily focus. Every board adds automatic overdue, unassigned, inactive, due-soon, and per-list signals with card drill-downs. Global Work adds My Cards, Team Cards, Portfolio, and Work Done across accessible boards.

Personal and team priority queues Partial or plan-gated. My Tasks gathers a person's assignments and My Bar keeps them available from anywhere. Basecamp does not document an independent manual rank that managers can curate for each teammate across projects.

Included. Up next keeps one ranked order across boards. Open your drawer anywhere, add, reorder, complete, or remove assigned cards in My Cards, filter to queued work, and manage permitted teammate queues from a focused dock or Team Cards grid and table views.

Cards & Work

Work item detail Included. To-dos and Card Table cards hold assignees, dates, descriptions, files, discussions, and subtasks or card steps. Basecamp intentionally uses a lighter work-item model than Kanera.

Included. Cards hold markdown descriptions with change diffs, due dates and time slots, assignees, labels, custom fields, attachments, covers, comments, checklists, watchers, and attributed activity.

Custom fields Not available. Basecamp's current feature and API documentation does not describe typed custom fields on to-dos or cards.

Included. Text, number, checkbox, date, URL, select, and user fields, with multi-value select and user fields, owned by one board or shared across a workspace.

Checklists Included. To-dos support subtasks, and Card Table cards support steps for breaking work down. Kanera additionally offers reusable checklist templates with item assignees and dates.

Included. Reusable checklist templates with item assignees, due dates, descriptions, and one level of sub-checklists. Assigned items surface in Home, My Cards, and focused Team Cards.

Bulk editing Not available. Basecamp 5 adds multi-selection in Docs & Files, but its product documentation does not describe a broad multi-to-do or multi-card editor comparable to Kanera.

Included. Selected cards can change dates, labels, assignees, custom fields, completion, location, copies, or archive state together.

Structure & Workflow

Independent projects Included. Each project has its own page, people, access, and configurable set of tools, including multiple tools of the same kind on eligible packages.

Included. Standalone boards keep their own lists, labels, fields, templates, automations, permissions, and settings.

Shared structure Partial or plan-gated. Project and to-do list templates can repeat structure, but Basecamp does not document live account-wide lists, fields, and automations shared across projects.

Included. Workspace boards can reuse lists, labels, fields, checklist templates, automations, and reporting.

Automation Partial or plan-gated. Automatic Check-ins ask recurring questions and schedules can repeat. This is useful focused automation, not a general trigger, condition, and action workflow builder.

Included. Six card triggers drive ordered actions across labels, assignees, checklist templates, due dates, custom field writes, moves, and completion, at board or workspace level.

Reporting Partial or plan-gated. A strong set of fixed reports covers status, activity, assignments, deadlines, project timelines, Hill Charts, and time. Basecamp does not offer Kanera's editable Table calculations and field-based breakdowns or a configurable widget dashboard builder.

Included. Table calculations and breakdowns, Portfolio rollups and drill-downs, Work Done history, saved Global Work views, and Excel or JSON export cover operational reporting.

One-way board syncing Not available. Basecamp's native product documentation does not describe one work item living across projects or one-way project syncing. Third-party integrations can connect Basecamp to other systems.

Included. Selected source lists can feed linked copies on another board, keeping shared card content and mapped workflow context current one way.

Collaboration & Access

Collaboration Included. Threaded Message Boards, to-do and card discussions, @mentions, Campfire group chat, direct Pings, files, voice notes, and attributed activity make communication a Basecamp strength.

Included. Comments with mentions, quote replies, and thumbs-up acknowledgement, plus attachments, realtime updates, presence, and an attributed activity history beside the work.

External access Included. Client mode lets teams invite clients project by project and choose which items they can see. Studio and higher include unlimited users, while Free and Freelancer cap total users.

Partial or plan-gated. Pro keeps guests board-scoped: the first board is free, while a second or later board uses one purchased seat in total. Hosted Free has no guests, and self-hosted has no seat gate.

Notes and context Partial or plan-gated. Docs & Files stores documents, uploads, folders, and cloud-file links, while Basecamp 5 adds private personal Notes. It does not use Kanera's nested personal, workspace, and board notes tree.

Included. Scratchpad keeps autosaved work in progress private to one person. Personal and shared Notes add nested trees, attachments, search, and card backlinks for durable context.

Notifications Included. New For You combines notifications and direct Pings beside the work. Users can tune schedules, email and device delivery, snooze notifications, and Bubble Up items for later.

Included. An in-app drawer plus per-type delivery to email, browser push, ntfy, Gotify, or your own signed webhook, with per-workspace pause and scoping rules, card and board watching, mentions, assignments, and due dates. The drawer, email, push, and rules are on every plan; ntfy, Gotify, and personal webhooks need Pro or self-hosted.

Data & Migration

API and webhooks Included. Basecamp maintains an OAuth 2.0 JSON REST API covering its current project model, plus project-scoped webhooks, an official SDK and CLI, and a third-party integration directory.

Included. Scoped API keys, a REST API, event-selective webhooks, and built-in Slack, Discord, Telegram, and Zulip chat destinations, all with delivery history, retries, pausing, and secret rotation. Included in Pro and self-hosted; hosted Free has none of them.

AI integration Partial or plan-gated. Basecamp currently supports shell-capable agents through its official CLI and Agent Skill. Its pricing page says first-party ChatGPT and Claude MCP connectors are coming soon; Basecamp does not position a built-in AI assistant as a core feature.

Partial or plan-gated. A native MCP server with OAuth gives compatible AI clients scoped access to live Kanera context and documentation search; AI is not built into the app.

Deployment Not available. Basecamp is a cloud service and does not offer a self-hosted edition.

Included. Hosted plans, or a source-available Docker Compose deployment under Elastic License 2.0 with full feature parity and no Kanera per-seat self-hosting fee.

Import and export Partial or plan-gated. Basecamp exposes broad project data through its API. Kanera has no native Basecamp importer, so a move requires API extraction and explicit mapping for communication tools and concepts Kanera does not model.

Partial or plan-gated. Reviewable Trello JSON, CSV, and Kanera archive import; Excel and JSON export; plus APIs for custom migrations.

Where each tool draws the line

Timeline, Gantt, and dependencies Partial or plan-gated. Lineup plots project start and end dates on an account-wide timeline, and calendars show dated work. Basecamp does not document task-level Gantt bars, dependency links, baselines, or critical-path planning.

Not available. Not included. Kanera plans with due dates, Calendar, and Table. There are no Gantt bars, baselines, or dependency links between cards.

Time tracking and workload Partial or plan-gated. Native time tracking and Timesheet reports record hours by person and project. Basecamp does not document workload balancing or forward-looking capacity planning.

Not available. No timer and no capacity planning. Numeric custom fields hold estimates or hours, and Table can sum or average them by group.

Request forms Not available. Email forwarding can collect correspondence and Automatic Check-ins collect recurring answers, but Basecamp does not document a native request-form builder with field mapping and routing.

Not available. No form builder. Intake arrives through cards, one-way board syncing, or the REST API.

Sign-in and provisioning Partial or plan-gated. Basecamp supports password sign-in, Google sign-in, two-factor authentication, project access controls, and enhanced admin features. Its current help explicitly says SSO and SAML are not supported, and it does not document SCIM provisioning.

Partial or plan-gated. Email and password sign-in with organisation, workspace, and board roles. No SAML, OIDC, or SCIM for user accounts yet; AI clients authenticate to MCP with OAuth.

Apps and offline use Included. Native iOS, Android, macOS, and Windows apps complement the web app and command-line access.

Partial or plan-gated. Installable PWA on desktop, iOS, and Android with offline board browsing, push notifications, and share-to-card. No native app-store builds.

Interface languages Not available. Basecamp currently says its interface is available in English only, while content can be written in any language.

Not available. English only today.

## Where Kanera takes a different path.

### Review progress without building dashboards

Work Done shows a 60-day daily history of created, moved, and completed cards plus finished checklist items.

### See work at every level

Use Home for today, per-board health for local risk, My Cards and Team Cards for execution, and Portfolio for cross-board drill-downs.

### Move from signal to action quickly

Open one keyboard palette to create a card, navigate, change theme, or search cards, notes, comments, and attachment names.

### Keep context at the right level

Use Scratchpad for private work in progress, then move durable material into personal or team Notes.

### Choose independent or shared boards

Keep boards fully independent, or reuse lists, labels, fields, checklist templates, and automations across a workspace.

### Mirror client work one way

Map source lists into another board so an internal team gets working copies, with local assignees and dates and no custom API bridge.

### Connect the stack and keep control

Use scoped API keys, managed webhooks, and MCP, and export reports to Excel or JSON. Self-host the same product when deployment control matters.

## Bring a real project into the evaluation.

Use CSV when the source data can be reduced to cards and fields. Projects, tools, documents, chat, check-ins, Hill Charts, time entries, and attachments need a planned migration.

## Frequently asked questions

Is Kanera a direct replacement for Basecamp? Yes, for teams that use Basecamp to organise projects, to-dos, card tables, schedules, files, comments, clients, and cross-project status.

It is not a like-for-like replacement for teams that depend on Basecamp's Message Boards, Campfire chat, Automatic Check-ins, Hill Charts, native time tracking, or fixed account pricing. Kanera also has no built-in team chat today.

What does Basecamp do that Kanera does not? Basecamp brings threaded Message Boards, project chat and direct Pings, Automatic Check-ins, Hill Charts, client visibility controls, native time tracking and timesheets, native desktop and mobile apps, and fixed-price packages into one deliberately straightforward product.

Kanera has no native chat, automatic recurring questions, Hill Chart, running timer, or app-store builds. Basecamp is the stronger fit when that communication model is the centre of the work.

Where does Kanera differ from Basecamp? Kanera adds typed custom fields, broad bulk editing, optional workspace-wide lists and fields, ranked personal and team priority queues, an editable reporting table, Portfolio drill-downs, Work Done history, one-way board syncing, trigger-and-action automation, granular outbound notifications, and full-featured self-hosting.

Basecamp keeps projects more independent. Project templates repeat a setup, but they do not create Kanera-style live shared structure across boards.

How does Basecamp pricing compare with Kanera? Basecamp charges a fixed account price instead of per-user fees. Its current packages are Free for one active project and five users, Freelancer at $25 per month for three active projects and 20 users, Studio at $59 per month for ten active projects and unlimited users, Pro at $99 per month for 25 active projects and unlimited users, and Unlimited at $299 per month billed annually.

Kanera Pro is $5 per user per month or $49 per user per year. Kanera also has a Free plan and a self-hosted edition with no Kanera licence or per-seat fee, so the cheaper option depends heavily on team size and active-project count.

Do Basecamp and Kanera both work with AI agents? Yes, but differently. Basecamp currently provides a CLI and Agent Skill for shell-capable agents; its pricing page describes official ChatGPT and Claude MCP connectors as coming soon.

Kanera provides a native MCP server now on Pro and self-hosted, plus a CLI, TypeScript SDK, scoped API keys, and read-only credentials. Neither product requires an in-app AI assistant to manage the underlying work.

Can Kanera import Basecamp projects? Use CSV when the source data can be shaped into card rows with lists, people, dates, comments, checklists, and fields.

Projects, tools, documents, chat, check-ins, Hill Charts, time entries, and attachments need an explicit retention or conversion plan.
